The animal kingdom is filled with creatures that work together to get what they want. These are nature’s wildest friendships.

This is Nagarhole, southern India.

ここは南インドのナガラホール。

There are more than 100 tigers here, and just as many leopards.

ここには100頭を超えるトラがおり、ヒョウもほぼ同数います。

The Hanuman langur, which is my favorite animal here, is unmistakable in the Indian jungle.

私がここで一番好きな動物、ハヌマーンラングールは、インドのジャングルではすぐに見分けがつきます。

These monkeys learn to navigate the trees from a very young age.

このサルたちは、とても幼い頃から木々を渡り歩くことを学びます。

Introducing the most beautiful, clever, and my favorite animal in this jungle, the chital.

このジャングルで最も美しく、賢く、そして何より私のお気に入りの動物。それが、このチタルです。

Those spots help them blend into their surroundings.

この斑点のおかげで、周りの景色に溶け込むことができるのです。

They’re not invisible. They’re just incredibly camouflaged.

彼らの姿が見えなくなるのではありません。単に、驚くほどうまく周囲に溶け込んでいるのです。

The langurs eat like there’s no tomorrow.

ラングールは、まるで明日がないかのように食べます。

They’re not worried about a few scraps going to waste.

彼らは、多少の食べこぼしが無駄になることなど気にしていません。

This is what the chital have been waiting for.

これこそ、チタルが待ち望んでいたものです。

They don’t waste their energy climbing trees. They let the clumsy monkeys do all the hard work.

彼らは自ら木に登って体力を無駄にしたりはしません。面倒な仕事はすべて、あの不器用なサルたちに任せるのです。

Jungles can get hot. The animals know how to cool themselves down though.　

ジャングルは暑くなるものです。ですが、動物たちは体を冷やす方法を知っています。

They find shade where they can and take little dips in refreshing murky ponds.

彼らは日陰を見つけて涼んだり、濁った池で水浴びをしたりします。

Leopards hunt langurs and chital.

ヒョウはラングールやチタルを狩ります。

Junglefowl? That looks likes a chicken.

あれがヤケイなの？ ニワトリにそっくり！

This is why the chital spooked the langurs?

チタルがラングールをおびえさせたのは、そういう訳だったのね。

I guess it’s better to be safe than sorry.

用心に越したことはないよね。

Talk about friends with benefits. The langurs clearly saved the day.

まさに「持ちつ持たれつ」の関係ですね。ラングールが窮地（きゅうち）を救ったのは明らかです。

They fed the deer and alerted them to a killer.

彼らはシカに食べ物を与え。そして、捕食者の存在を知らせました。

The chitals haven’t done anything, but eat off langur scraps.

一方、チタルはラングールのおこぼれを食べていただけです。

共生関係にあるほかの動物たちもみてみよう！

ラングールとチタルのように、多くの動物がユニークな協力関係を持っています。ここに相利共生（お互いに利益がある関係）の例をいくつか紹介します。

Coyotes and Badgers / コヨーテとアナグマ

They often hunt together. The badger can dig into burrows to flush out animals like prairie dogs, and the coyote, being faster, can catch the prey if it tries to escape from another exit.

彼らはよく一緒に狩りをします。アナグマが巣穴を掘ってプレーリードッグのような動物を追い出し、足の速いコヨーテが別の出口から逃げようとする獲物を捕まえます。

Cleaner Fish and Groupers / ソウジウオとハタ

In the ocean, large fish like groupers will allow small cleaner fish to swim inside their mouths. The cleaner fish gets a meal by eating parasites and dead skin, and the grouper gets its teeth cleaned for free.

海の中では、ハタのような大きな魚が、小さなソウジウオに口の中に入ることを許します。ソウジウオは寄生虫や古い皮膚を食べて食事にありつき、ハタは無料で歯の掃除をしてもらえます。

Oxpeckers and Zebras / ウシツツキとシマウマ

The oxpecker bird rides on the back of zebras or rhinos. It eats ticks and other parasites off the animal’s skin for food. In return, if the oxpecker spots a predator, it will create a loud noise, alerting the larger animal to the danger.

ウシツツキという鳥は、シマウマやサイの背中に乗ります。動物の皮膚についたダニや他の寄生虫を食べて食料にします。その見返りとして、もしウシツツキが捕食者を見つけたら、大きな鳴き声をあげて、大きな動物に危険を知らせます。
