9．Papel Picado (Decorative Paper Banners)

English: Papel Picado means “perforated paper.” These are colorful paper banners with intricate designs cut into them. They are hung up on streets and ofrendas. The delicate paper represents the fragility of life, and when the wind blows through them, it’s said that the souls of the loved ones have arrived.

English: A Calavera is a skull. But don’t be scared! During Día de los Muertos, you see calaveras everywhere, made of sugar or chocolate. They are decorated with bright, colorful icing and flowers. They are a fun and sweet way to represent the souls of the departed and to remind us that death is a natural part of life.

1．Cempasúchil (Marigold Flowers)
